Almost every incident in life teaches us
something. Some incidents happen because of our decisions, while others occur
in circumstances where we have little or no control. The two incidents I am
going to share fall into the second category. Looking back, I often wonder
whether anything could have been done to prevent them. Yet, I believe these
were situations that were largely beyond my control.
Both incidents involve teenage suicide, a
sensitive issue on which I intend to write a separate and detailed blog in the
future. However, these experiences left a deep impression on my mind and
continue to remind me of the importance of understanding the emotional
struggles hidden behind smiling faces.
Incident 1:
A Tragic Train Journey
This incident took place in 1991. I was
travelling on duty from Wardha to Badnera by train. During the journey, a boy
of about sixteen or seventeen years of age crossed my path and walked towards
the door of the moving train. There was nothing unusual in his appearance or
behavior that could have alerted anyone.
Within moments, he suddenly jumped out of the
moving train.
The incident happened so quickly that no one
had time to react. Later, when I returned from Badnera, I saw a covered body
lying on the platform. It was the same boy.
I later learned that he had taken his own life
because he had failed an examination.
Even today, I sometimes think that if I could
have understood what was going on in his mind, perhaps I could have spoken to
him and saved him. But the reality is that there was no indication of what he
was about to do. For me, this remains one of those incidents that were beyond
my control.
Incident 2:
The Smiling Girl Next Door
At that time, I was living in Warora. A girl
studying in Class XI lived near our house. She regularly visited our
neighborhood and appeared cheerful, friendly, and sociable. Nothing about her
behavior suggested that she was carrying a heavy emotional burden.
One day, shocking news spread through the
locality. The girl had died after stepping in front of a train near an
overbridge.
Later, it became known that she had been
pregnant.
The entire incident left me deeply disturbed.
Looking back, I still consider it an event beyond my control because no one
around her seemed aware of the struggle she was facing.
However, unlike the first incident, I also
view this as a social failure. A society that cannot create a safe environment
for young people to discuss fear, mistakes, relationships, mental health, and
unexpected crises leaves many teenagers feeling isolated. When individuals
believe they have nowhere to turn for understanding or support, society must
reflect on its own shortcomings.
Lessons
from These Incidents
These two incidents taught me that appearances
can be deceptive. A person may look normal, smile, talk, and interact with
others while silently carrying overwhelming emotional distress.
While I view these events as beyond my
personal control, I also believe that families, educational institutions,
communities, and society must work together to create an environment where
young people feel safe seeking help.
Every life is precious. Sometimes a
compassionate conversation, timely guidance, or emotional support can make a
significant difference.
Let us build a society where no teenager feels
completely alone in their moment of despair.
